Building an instrument for an airborne observatory still under development and with changing boundary conditions has been a challenge in many ways, both, technically and programatically, some of them expected and some of them rather unexpected. Since this effort took place in parallel with the Herschel/PACS project, we can compare how challenges differ between an autonomous space observatory and a crewed airborne observatory and where the strengths and weaknesses of either approach lie.
