The Sunrise Mission: A High Resolution Stratospheric Solar Observatory
Sunrise is the biggest solar observatory, which could escape the disturbing influence of Earth´s atmosphere. During two stratospheric long duration balloon flights in 2009 and 2013 over the arctic from Sweden to Canada it harvested solar images and spectro-polarimetric maps with unprecedented quality, leading to well over 100 scientific publications on small-scale solar magnetic fields until today. A third flight in summer 2022 is in the final preparation phase. In this talk I will review the scientific motivation and the resulting mission architecture of Sunrise. Special emphasis will be given to the design of the instrumentation, which is often more close to space-borne than to ground-based instruments.
