Towards Heterodyne Arrays for Space and Airborne Applications

To study the chemical and physical processes taking place in different regions in the universe maps of spectra are often required. Therefore, the first heterodyne array receivers have been constructed for ground based telescopes as well as small arrays for telescopes carried by balloons and airplanes. We have carried out the first design study of a heterodyne array receiver for a satellite mission, the Origins Space Telescope. The limited satellite resources, in particular the little cooling and the little electrical power available forced us to find innovative solution and search for low energy consuming components. We identified promising candidates and drew a receiver development roadmap. Airborne observatories could also benefit from this study and any related R&D work, as a lower energy design will allow the construction of larger arrays, while not increasing the demands on the airplane or the balloon.
