Possible Futures with HIRMES or HIRMES-like Instruments on SOFIA
HIRMES is a high resolving power direct detection Fabry-Perot Interferometer that was developed as the 3rd generation instrument for SOFIA. Its primary science program was to velocity-resolve far-IR lines of the building blocks of planets (e.g., water and water ice, oxygen, HD and hydrogen ) from nearby proto-planetary disks. The placement of the gaseous species within the disks is then determined by their measured orbital velocity. HIRMES also had moderate resolving-power long-slit grating spectroscopic and FPI spectral imaging modes suitable for studies of Galactic star formation regions and nearby galaxies. HIRMES was cancelled in April of 2020.
